Joining us from the Ruhr area in Germany, this time around on the URPR blog we sit down with liquidfive, or Martin Maximilian Kotzur, to discuss his unique sonic profile, recent successful releases alongside the likes of Alltag and Joel Coopa and much more.

1.Tell us about your liquidfive alias, where did the name come from?

With the name liquidfive it’s actually quite simple. I founded a band in 2011 with five musicians. Since I wanted a name with the number five in it, I somehow came up with the name liquidfive and called my band, in which I was the drummer, that. I later broke up the band in 2015 and continued as a DJ. Producer. Songwriter. on my own from 2017 until today.

2.How would you describe your sound/energy behind the decks?

Engaging with my audience during a live set is paramount to me. I strive to create an immersive experience where listeners are not just passive spectators, but active participants in the journey of the music. I achieve this by reading the energy of the crowd, responding to their reactions, and curating a dynamic set that resonates with them on a visceral level. Whether it’s through seamless transitions, unexpected track selections, or interactive moments, I aim to forge a deep connection with my audience, fostering a sense of unity and euphoria on the dance floor. Visit one of my future gigs and dance with me.

3.What drew you to the dance music scene, and who are some of your biggest influences in the genre?

What initially drew me into the dance music scene was the pioneering spirit and innovation of the early electronic music artists, particularly those emerging from Berlin. Artists like Kraftwerk and Sven Väth captivated me with their groundbreaking sounds and forward-thinking approach to music production. Their ability to create entire worlds of sound using synthesizers and electronic instruments fascinated me and inspired me to explore the possibilities of electronic music further.

As I delved deeper into the dance music scene, I discovered a myriad of artists who have had a profound influence on my own sound and style. DJs and producers like Carl Cox, Paul van Dyk, and Richie Hawtin have been instrumental in shaping my understanding of dance music and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the genre. Their dedication to their craft, innovative techniques, and electrifying performances continue to inspire me on my own music journey.

4.Which festivals and/or venues are on your bucket list to DJ at? And what makes them so special to you?

On the top of my bucket list is definitely the Tomorrowland festival in Belgium. Tomorrowland holds a special place in my heart as the epitome of festival culture, with its incredible atmosphere and unparalleled energy. The thought of DJing on one of Tomorrowland’s iconic stages, surrounded by passionate music lovers from around the world, is a dream come true. The opportunity to share my music and connect with such a diverse and enthusiastic audience would be an unforgettable experience.

5.What is the best DJ/artist set you’ve seen this year and why was it so memorable?

The best DJ/artist set I’ve seen this year was definitely James Hype’s live set at EDC Mexico 2024. It was an electrifying experience from start to finish, filled with energy, creativity, and innovation.

One reason why it was so memorable for me is that James Hype’s performance inspired me to try new DJ techniques and push the boundaries of my own skills. His seamless mixing, creative mashups, and dynamic stage presence showcased his mastery of the craft and left a lasting impression on me.

6.Can you describe your experience at the recent MMW?

My experience at the recent Miami Music Week was absolutely inspiring and unforgettable. Meeting so many friends, DJs, and industry professionals from all corners of the globe was incredibly enriching. The energy and passion for music were palpable everywhere you went, and I felt truly immersed in the heart of the music industry.

Networking and connecting with like-minded individuals opened up new opportunities and collaborations that I’m excited to explore further. From attending electrifying performances to participating in insightful panels and workshops, every moment was filled with excitement and possibility.

Miami Music Week reignited my creativity and drive, reminding me of why I fell in love with music in the first place. I left feeling inspired and motivated to continue pushing the boundaries of my artistry, and I can’t wait to return next year for another exhilarating experience.

7.Do you have any tips for someone who would like to become a music producer?

For aspiring music producers, I have a few tips based on my own journey in the industry. Firstly, work hard and stay dedicated to your craft. Producing music requires consistent practice and experimentation to refine your skills and develop your unique sound.

Secondly, believe in yourself and your vision, even when things aren’t going the way you want them to. Trust in your abilities and stay focused on your goals, knowing that perseverance and determination will ultimately lead to success.

Lastly, have patience and stay resilient. The music industry can be challenging and competitive, but with time and persistence, you can achieve your dreams. Stay open to learning, stay humble, and never stop pushing yourself to grow and evolve as a producer.

Remember, success doesn’t happen overnight, but with hard work, belief in yourself, and patience, you can make your mark in the world of music production.

8.Can you tell us about your upcoming releases?

Yes, my next song “Stars In The Sky” will be released on Wednesday April 17th, which I’m really looking forward to. After that, new releases continue in quick succession.

I’m beyond excited to share some upcoming projects and collaborations with our readers! Then up, on April 26th, I’ll be dropping a track titled ‘Pretty Little Things,’ a collaboration with the incredible talents of Kovan and Poylux. It’s been an incredible journey working with them, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear the result of our collaboration.

Following that, mark your calendars for May 10th because I’ll be releasing another collaboration titled ‘You & I,’ this time with the amazing artists Crüpo and Nghtime!. Working with them has been an absolute blast, and I believe this track will be something truly special.

But that’s not all! There are more collaborations in the works, but unfortunately, I can’t reveal any details just yet. All I can say is that there’s a lot of exciting music on the horizon, so stay tuned for updates and be sure to follow along for all the latest news!

9.Outside of music, what other passions do you have/ how do you enjoy spending your time?

During my downtime, aside from producing music, I enjoy engaging in a variety of activities that help me recharge and find inspiration. One of my favorite pastimes is fishing. There’s something incredibly calming and meditative about being out on the water, surrounded by nature, and patiently waiting for that elusive bite. It allows me to clear my mind, reconnect with the natural world, and often sparks creative ideas that find their way into my music.

I’m also an avid reader, and you can often find me immersed in a good book. Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, or biographies, I love exploring different worlds and perspectives through literature. Reading not only expands my knowledge but also stimulates my imagination, influencing my artistic vision in unexpected ways.

Lastly, I cherish spending time with friends. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee, going for a hike, or simply hanging out and sharing stories, the camaraderie and laughter we share rejuvenate my spirit and remind me of the importance of human connection amidst the solitary nature of music production. These moments of leisure and connection outside of the studio enrich my life and ultimately enhance my creativity when I return to making music.

10.Finally, what are you most looking forward to in 2024?

In 2024, I’m most looking forward to making a breakthrough in radio and achieving success with my music. I’ve been working tirelessly to hone my craft and connect with audiences, and I’m excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. Whether it’s reaching new listeners through radio airplay, collaborating with other artists, or performing live shows, I’m committed to making 2024 a milestone year in my music career. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me and to share my music with the world in even bigger ways.
