YERO – Urban Rebel PR Interview

YERO, the alter ego of seasoned industry figure Johnny Gerontakis, has been making waves across Greece’s vibrant club scene. His energetic sets at hotspots like FarOut Beach Club, Cozmo Athens, Oddity, and Cavo Paradiso have been the talk of the underground. However, it was his recent debut at the iconic Tomorrowland Festival this summer that truly announced his arrival on the global stage. Taking over the Melodia Stage on the festival’s peak day, YERO delivered an energetic set that left the crowd craving more.

We caught up with him to learn more about his new project, influences, and what’s next for this dynamic DJ and producer. 

1.Hi Johnny, great to have you here! To kick things off, could you introduce yourself to those who might not be familiar with your work?

Hi everyone, I’m a DJ, producer, and club owner from Athens, Greece. I’ve been in the industry for more than 15 years under my original name or my DJ duo Ace2Ace, and in 2024, I started my new artist project, YERO.

2.What drew you to the dance music scene, and who are some of your biggest influences in the genre?

I fell in love with the energy of house music when I was 15 years old, dancing to tracks like Hardsoul’s “Back Together” and collecting compilations by Defected Records. Later on, I was influenced by DJs like Erick Morillo and Steve Angello.

3.You’ve spent years in the underground scene, DJing at places like Cozmo Athens and Blast. How have these experiences influenced the music you’re creating under YERO?

The music I’m trying to create under YERO is basically what I would personally love to listen to at the club, considering all my experiences. So, it’s all about tribal rhythms, classic vocals, and groovy beats!

4.Your debut track, “Wonderful Life” featuring Christian Burns, has been well received. What was the creative process behind transforming this ’80s hit into a fresh house track?

I got offered that amazing vocal right when I was exploring new sounds, so I felt it would be the perfect match! Then Kryder jumped in, and magic happened!

5.”After Hours” is your follow-up single. Can you walk us through the inspiration and production process behind this track?

I used a hip-hop-style vocal on that one, and the beat pretty much defines my club sound.

6.Tomorrowland is a dream for many artists. How did it feel to perform there, and how does it compare to other major gigs you’ve done?

It was special and, of course, a milestone! Two things I will never forget are the treatment of all artists and the unity vibe across the festival, and of course, how educated the crowd was!

7.Which festivals and/or venues are on your bucket list to DJ at? And what makes them so special to you?

I would love to make it to EDC and Ultra for festivals, and regarding clubs, Hi in Ibiza!

8.You’ve been making waves with gigs at top venues in Greece like FarOut Beach Club. Do you have any upcoming shows or plans you can share with us?

For wintertime, my base is Cozmo in Athens, plus some eclectic gigs abroad.

9.Outside of music, what other passions do you have? How do you enjoy spending your time?

I love to do all kinds of sports, but especially basketball!

10.Finally, any tips or tricks for aspiring DJs and producers you would like to share?

My main rule/advice is to try to be yourself and never copy others!
