Radio Slave
“No matter what sounds you profess to be your music of choice, chances are, that at some point over the last five years, you will have got your rocks off to Matt Edwards.”
Introduction: So let’s begin. Radio Slave – aka Matt Edwards – is a man whose talent doesn’t seem to end. His productions, remixes and DJ sets have only one aim: to make you move – inside and out. Originally from Brighton in the UK, Radio Slave re-located to the natural home of the electronic movement this past Decade, Berlin, in 2008.
Creation: Radio Slave’s productions never miss a beat because his ideas never stop. His Rekids ‘No Sleep’ EP series, beginning in 2006 and currently on Part Six, are always highly anticipated and highly coveted. They include essential DJ cuts like ‘Screaming Hands’ (which got the remix treatment from Josh Wink), ‘Tantakatan’ and ‘Koma Koma’ (made essential New Tune by Pete Tong). Radio Slave’s main EP releases of last year, ‘Bell Clap Dance’ and ‘Grindhouse’ (Feat Danton Eeeprom / with a remix from Dubfire) became two of the biggest dance records of 2008. He also works under the nom de guerres Quiet Village (with an album out on !K7 in 2008), Rekid, Matthew E and Sea Devils – with musical styles ranging from spaced-out stoner funk to propulsive dancefloor monsters, and from intricate widescreen cinerama to blissful electronic pop. Radio Slave was also named, by the UK’s DJ Mag, as the ‘Producer Of The Year’ in 2008.
Transformation: Classed as one of the greatest remixers of all time, Radio Slave’s remixes – including artists like Talking Heads, Danny Tenaglia, Kylie Minogue, Carl Craig, Trentmoller, DJ Hell, Tiefschwarz, Gwen Stefani, Le Noir, Sir Elton John and Sasha – deconstruct and reconstruct the original inspiration into explosive compositions that become his own and step up the game with each re-work.
Movement: Radio Slave holds a quarterly label residency at Panorama Bar in Berlin (recently voted number one club in the world), DJs at Fabric exclusively in London and tours the world every week – including Europe, USA, Asia, Ibiza (gigs at Cocoon and Space this summer) and every festival that counts.
Base: Rekids, run by Radio Slave and James Masters, arrived in May 2006 with Radio Slave’s own ‘My Bleep’ setting the standard. As well as Radio Slave’s own releases, the label has since released EPs and Long Players from the likes of Toby Tobias, Mr G, Luke Solomon, Matt O’Brien, Spencer Parker, Jjak Hogan, Runaway, two label compilations and Radio Slave’s own ‘Works!’ compilation coming in 2010 – a 3 x CD of some of his best and most recent remix work.
